Obituary for 薛中川 Zhongchuan Xue

Born to a cultured and well-off family in China on October 25, 1938, Zhongchuan Xue was the first of 10 children. Exiled from their ancestral home in Wuxi at the time, he was born in Chongqing during the Japanese occupation. He felt strongly that his life and the life of his children should be impactful and contribute to the storied history of the family name he respected deeply.

Graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1959, Zhongchuan Xue became a distinguished professor of naval engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. As a prominent scholar, Zhongchuan made significant contributions to Inland Waterway Shipform with a breakthrough design of Flat Bow and Cochlea-channeled Stern which significantly increased the navigation stability and propulsion efficiency. Zhongchuan was highly respected in his field. He was one of the first few scholars in the early 80s to publish papers in the international science magazines such as SNAME and Norway Ship Design Symposium. During those same years he was the exceptionally rare Chinese scholar who got invited to present at universities in West Berlin, Japan and the US. Zhongchuan later co-founded a few shipbuilding and cruise line companies which applied his innovative ship-stern designs. Despite this renowned career, Zhongchuan also devoted his life to his family with an emphasis on Education. He and his wife Xian Ping sent their two daughters to prestigious universities in the United States, where they went on to build families and careers of their own.

After retiring at 65, Zhongchuan and his Xianping shared a passion for travel, food and adventures. They eventually followed their children to the United States and continued to travel with their family throughout. Zhongchuan happily enjoyed his later life with gardening and nature. He was always very proud and assured that his grandchildren would successfully uphold the strong family line. Zhongchuan Xue had a full, productive and impactful life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
