Obituary for Chi Chiang Mao M.D., Ph.D.

Chi Chiang Mao, M.D., Ph.D., 毛 志 江, was born in Guangdong, China, on August 7, 1942, the eldest son of Mr. Mao Songnian, former chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission of the Republic of China. He grew up and completed his high school and college education in Taiwan. He received his B.S. Degree in Zoology from National Taiwan University in 1965. He was determined to study medicine since he was young, and came to the United States to further his education. He received a Ph.D. degree in Medical Physiology from the University of Oklahoma in 1971, and a M.D. degree with honors from the University of Texas at Houston in 1981. He did his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas at Houston and at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals. He taught medical physiology at Univ. of Oklahoma and conducted research at National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, D.C., in the field of neuro-pharmacology.

Dr. Mao began practicing medicine in Houston in 1981, as one of the first overseas Chinese physicians in Houston. Dr. Mao was good at various medical examinations, urgent care, geriatrics, anti-aging, and stem cell-related technologies. He practiced family medicine and internal medicine in Houston for over thirty five years. He was the Medical Director and Chairman of the Physician Association of Select Specialty Hospitals- Houston, L.P. He has published extensively in the fields of neuro-pharmacology and physiology, and has been an invited speaker at local, national and international conferences. He loves reading, speaks fluently, is easily approachable, Dr. Mao has contributed to the overseas Chinese community for many years.

Dr. Mao was the founder of Chinese American Doctors Association of Houston (CADAH), a professional association of Chinese American physicians and dentists, serving as its first president from 1993 to 1995. He was named CADAH’s Doctor of the Year in 2012. He also served on the CADAH Foundation Board for many years and was its president in 2015. He was the consultant of the Houston Branch of the World Guangdong Association and the Vice President of the American National Chen Style Taijiquan Association.

Dr. Chi Chiang Mao passed away on February 24, 2021, due to complications caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. His sudden death brought deep sorrow to all overseas Chinese in Houston. Dr. Mao's wife, Lin Chi-Shaw (Shelley), died in April, 2020. He is survived by one son, Dillon, and one daughter, Noreen, who is married to Brian Vavra, and two grandchildren, Cybil, 19, and Ashton, 2.

The Chinese American Doctors Association of Houston (CADAH) has set up a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Chi C. Mao. Dr. Peter Cheng has generously committed a $10,000 matching grant for the first $10,000 donation. CADAH is a non-profit organization promoting the social and professional images of Chinese doctors to which Dr. Mao has been proud to be a member for decades. This is a legacy he would be honored to pass on.

毛志江醫學博士生平介紹 毛志江醫學博士,名門之後,為中華民國僑務委員會前委員長毛松年先生長子。1942 年 8 月7 日出生於中國廣東三江,在台灣成長就學,完成了高中和大學學歷,1965 年畢業於國立台灣大學。毛醫師從小立志學醫,來美國深造,於 1971 年獲得俄克拉荷馬大學(University of Oklahoma),醫學生理學博士學位。35 歲時在德州大學休士頓健康科學中心取得醫學博士學位,在 Baylor College Of Medicine 完成住院醫訓練,1981 年開始在休士頓行醫,為休士頓第一位華人醫師,毛醫師擅長於各類體檢,Urgent Care, 老年醫學,抗老化以及幹細胞相關技術,先後在休士頓的德州大學和貝勒醫學院附屬醫院擔任內科住院醫師,在華盛頓特區國家健康研究院從事學術研究,在神經藥理及生理學範疇著述良多,並在國內外的會議上受邀發表演講。

毛醫師在休士頓開業,從事家庭醫學和內科醫學超過 35 年。喜愛讀書,談吐斯文,平易近人,喜歡幫助病人,勤於實踐和思考。毛醫師多年貢獻僑社,醫術高超、精湛,救人無數。 毛醫師還兼任 Select Medical Corporation 屬下休斯頓三所醫院的醫務總監暨醫師會主席。也是華裔醫師協會創會會長,目前仍為該會監事會主席。他同時是世界廣東同鄉會休士頓分會顧問,美國全國陳式太極拳總會副會長。

毛志江醫師不幸於 2021 年 2 月 24 日因新冠病毒(COVID-19)感染,引致併發症辭世。他的遽然離世,給休市全僑至深的哀痛與悼念。 毛醫師於美求學創業成功後,將父母接至美國定居,三代同堂,晨昏定省侍奉雙親至孝,手足自幼情感深厚,對兩位姊姊亦尊敬至深。其夫人林琪曉於去(2020)年 3 月因病去世,膝下
有一子一女,長男華盛(Dillon),長女若蘭(Noreen)適 Brian Vavra。擁有兩孫,19 歲的 Cybil和 2 歲的 Ashton。
