Obituary

After midnight on Monday, September 7, 2020, seven days before his 95th birthday, Jeremias Cabuhat Umale, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, went home to be with his Creator.

Tatay Jerry, as he is fondly called, was born in Cavinti, Laguna, Philippines. He was the second of three sons to Maximo Umale and Simforosa Cabuhat. He was married to AsunciĆ³n Natalio of Santa Cruz, Laguna, Philippines who preceded him in death in 2018.

As an elementary school teacher for 27 years and as a Boy Scout leader with Eagle Scout rank , he was a favorite of many students for his way of teaching with extraordinary patience and kindness. After immigrating to the USA in 1989, he worked for the next 12 years as a school Crossing Guard of Alief Independent School District in Houston, Texas where he was awarded many times for excellent service and perfect attendance. As President of United Senior Citizens of Texas (USCAT), he was recognized for his leadership. Both Tatay Jerry and Nanay Sioning were awarded Outstanding Grandparents of the Year in 1995 by the Houston Police Department and then Houston Mayor Brown.

Tatay Jerry was a follower of Christ who showed love for his Savior and Lord not by his words but by how he lived. He would always tell his family to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. He was a model of forgiveness as he loved even those who have taken advantage of his kindness and generosity. Before his death, he was a member of the First Philippine Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. And when he could not anymore physically attend church because of his physical ailments, he would join his church family in online worship service to pray, praise God, sing, and read the Scripture.

Tatay Jerry also was a great lover of sports particularly basketball and baseball. He was so proud when the Houston Rockets won back-to-back NBA championships in 1995 and 1996. And when the Houston Astros became World Series Champions in 2017, he collected championship shirts, baseball caps, pennant, magazine and newspaper clippings. His children and most especially his grandchildren would remember him as a jolly Game Master who lead the family in group games during family gatherings and outings.

He is survived by his five children, Amor (Boy, deceased), Daisy (Tim), Arlene (Freddie), Denice (Eugene) and Jun (Josie); nine grandchildren, Bing (Jon), Janice (Nick), James (Jessyca), Jake (Nhi Nhi), Jun-jun, EM-J, Miko, Ivan, and Jed; and three great grandchildren, Jhasmine, Anika Faith, and Arabella Hope with another one, named Angel, on the way.

Indeed, Tatay Jerry will always be remembered by many whose lives he has touched. His legacy of great faith and unselfish love will be treasured forever.
