Kamla Verma passed away peacefully on May 25, 2023 at the age of 88 in her Houston home.
Mrs. Verma was the eldest of seven children, born on July 11, 1934 to parents, Karam Narain and Saraswati Devi Kinra. Entrusted with taking care of her siblings from a young age, Kamla was known across the family for her open mind, beauty, and leadership. After completing her bachelors in the liberal arts at the University of Calcutta, she met her husband, Kushal, through a series of fortunate events: one day at the office where she worked, Kushal’s father spotted her and noted her excellent English-speaking skills. After inquiring further about her studies, he remarked that he had a son... Introductions were made, and after marriage, Kamla and Kushal themselves had one son. They named him Umesh. A few years later, the family of three relocated to Mumbai to be closer to Kushal’s father and two sisters, Sheila and Kanta, before moving to Delhi in the mid-1960’s for Kushal’s job.
Kamla’s pride and joy was her son, and their bond remained strong when Umesh came over to the United States from India at 17 years old for his Bachelor’s at the University of Houston. He regularly wrote letters to his mother on his grades (all A’s), his experience living with relatives (changing Rajeev’s diapers), and his growing interest areas (not thermodynamics). With Kamla’s encouragement, Umesh founded his cybersecurity firm, BLUE LANCE. Soon, Kamla took on a more active role in supporting her son’s career, becoming the administrator of his company’s international branch. When Kushal passed in the late 1980’s, Umesh then brought Kamla to the United States to live with him, his wife: Preeti, and their three daughters: Reva, Neha, and Kara, where she stayed until her passing.
Kamla led a life full of laughter, love, determination, and faith. For her, every hardship had a lesson, forgiveness was paramount, and family came first. Kamla will be dearly missed by her siblings and their children, her daughter-in-law, and her granddaughters.
The family will be conducting a celebration of her life, including a Hindu service (kindly note: it is customary to wear white), followed by a cremation ceremony. Virtual attendance may be accessed by visiting this link:
