Obituary for Kirtikumar Vasantrai Mehta

Kirtikumar Vasantrai Mehta passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Sadguna, his son Milan, his daughter-in-law Bijal, his two grandchildren, Diya and Dilan, his brother Suresh and two sisters, Mrudula and Sheila. Kirtikumar was predeceased by his father, Vasantrai, his mother, Damayanti and his sister, Kumud.

Born on August 15, 1944 in Mumbai, India, Kirtikumar was the eldest of five children. Kirtikumar (who went by Kirti) was the first person from many generations of Mehta’s to go to college. Kirti began his college education at Jai Hind College. Later he received Bachelor’s in Engineering degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from VJTI affiliated with the University of Mumbai. He achieved the rank of #1 in his class for Mechanical Engineering at VJTI.

His first job out of college was at Calico Chemicals in Mumbai, India. Kirti helped and supported his family during this time and paved the way for his brother and sisters to get a college education as well.

In the late 1960s, Kirti moved to the United States of America to pursue graduate studies and a career in engineering. He received a Master’s in Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). In the early 1970s, he started to work at an engineering and consulting company named Black & Veatch.

On November 14, 1971, Kirti married Sadguna in Mumbai India and they settled in the United States of America in the great city of Kansas City. Milan was born a couple of years later. Kirti and family remained in Kansas City until 1988. After a short stint on the East Coast, Kirti and family moved to Sugar Land, Texas in 1989 where Kirti started a new role at M.W. Kellogg. Kirti worked at M.W. Kellogg for several years before transitioning to what is now called Fluor Corporation. Kirti finished out his career at Fluor Corporation.

Kirti diligently practiced a healthy lifestyle including meditation, yoga and regular long walks. Furthermore, Kirti enjoyed giving back to the Houston community. For many years, Kirti devoted his time to the Preksha Dhyana organization in Houston. Additionally, together with his wife, he studied Vaishnavism and Jainism and volunteered in the Jain community.

One dream which kept on eluding Kirti over the years was to live in California. In 2017, Kirti was able to realize his dream, when he and his wife bought a home in Irvine, California.

Kirti loved to travel – for many years, he and his wife went on cruises to different countries around the world. He loved good food including eating at restaurants as often as he could. Of course, Kirti loved good conversation with friends and family – he was always up for a never-ending debate on the philosophy of life. Most importantly, he cherished the small things in life and got the most out of every day.

The world won’t be the same without him.
