Obituary for Retna Nair

Retnakumari Elamthurathil Gopalakrishna Pillai came into this world on May 30, 1947 in Kottarakara, Kerala, India. She was the second-born child to the late Gopalakrishna Pillai and Smt. Ammukutty Amma. After finishing school in Kerala, Retna’s ambition and will brought her to Delhi, the capital of India, where she studied nursing with her older sister, the late Radhamani. At the successful conclusion of her studies in Delhi, Retna accepted an opportunity to work overseas at the Manhattan Hospital and later the Bronx Hospital in New York City in the United States, pioneering a path for her family’s expansion.

A week before her thirtieth birthday, she was united in marriage to Narendra Nair in her native state of Kerala. Upon her return to the United States, she relocated the family to Houston, Texas, where she loyally served for twenty years within the VA Hospital. Retna reigned as the matriarch of her family and devoted herself to selfless service. Retna was an active member within her Hindu community. She was seen regularly attending prayer group meetings and visiting temples amongst her many devotional activities. She became a pillar of strength to her family and friends. We will all forever miss her generous, kind, carefree nature, and zestful spirit.

She is survived by her husband, Narendra, son, Sunil, daughter-in-law, Vandana, grandchildren, Pranav and Prarthana, siblings, Rugmini, Babu, and Renu, her niece and nephew, Bindu and Rajesh, and numerous family and friends. Retna touched the lives of many friends and family around the world; her smile continues to radiate and lives on forever in our hearts and memories.
