Obituary for Richard Murwin FitzGerald

Richard Murwin FitzGerald was welcomed into Heaven on Monday, April 24, 2023 at the age of 78 in Houston, TX.

Richard was born on February 11, 1945 in Houston, TX to Francis and Vena May FitzGerald. He graduated from Spring Branch High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s from the University of Houston with a double major in math and physics. That August 4, 1967, he married Mary Bernice Thigpen. He taught high school math for one year before he went on to work at Brown and Root, Inc. as a Draftsman, and ultimately a Computer Programmer until he medically retired. He went on to have three children and four grandchildren. Richard had a dedicated servant’s heart. He was a volunteer and First Aid/CPR Trainer’s for the American Red Cross until he physically was unable to do so. He was a member and volunteer for Northwest Crossings and then Faith Church, involved with Sunday School, being a greeter, other church events and numerous celebrations throughout the years. He spent 55+ years of his life volunteering for the Assembly of God’s Royal Rangers Boys Organization, as he lived to be an example for young boys to become Godly men. He served the Royal Rangers in various capacities from the outpost to district level throughout the years with the hope that it may change at least one boy’s life in Christ.

Richard is survived by his children; Stephen, Youlonda and Tiffany; grandchildren; Edmund, William, Michael and Damon Cagle; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard is preceded in death by parents; Francis and Vena May FitzGerald, brother; Wilbur FitzGerald, all of Houston, TX, and loving wife of 55 years; Mary Bernice Thigpen FitzGerald, of Lufkin, TX.

Visitation will be from 6pm-8pm, Thursday, April 27, 2023 and Funeral Service will be 10 am, Friday, April 28, 2023, both at Winford Funeral Home in Houston, TX. A Graveside Service will follow at 2:30pm at Whitehouse Cemetery in Lufkin, TX. Pastor Nathan Rouse will officiate the Funeral in Houston, and Minister Pat Jones will officiate at the Graveside. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life.
