Obituary for Tam Lieu 廖汝良

Tam Lieu, age 65 years, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home on April 7, 2021 after a swift battle with lung cancer. He was born on March 24, 1956 in Vietnam, the son of Kaeu Moc Tai and Phong Cam Lieu. He was the second youngest of three brothers and two sisters.

Tam met his future wife, Huu Huynh, in their early teens, and during the Vietnam war, were forced to flee their home. They made their way on a small boat to Malaysia and thereafter set sail to the United States, making Houston, Texas their permanent home where they made a new life for themselves and proudly raised three sons. Aside from his struggle with cancer, the endeavor to the United States was one of his most difficult journey.

If Tam were here, he would say his biggest accomplishments were honorably providing for his family and witnessing his sons mature and create a family of their own; starting from the bottom and achieving his status as a head chef; and becoming a US citizen just prior to his passing.

Tam was known to have a generous heart as he always had spare change and a bottle of water to give any person he’d encounter. He had a humorous personality that could entertain an entire crowd and could talk for days about his life experiences.

Tam is survived by his wife, Huu Huynh; his three sons and their significant others, George Lieu and Pattie Ying, David Lieu and Madelaine Than, and Robin Lieu and Elisa Martinez; his three grandchildren, Kalaya Lieu, Paulina Lieu and Grayson Lieu; and his mother-in-law Son Lam.
